It happens. It’s pervasive. And it’s completely avoidable..
Far too often, ageism creeps into hiring decisions, especially in fields like marketing that are in a constant state of change. But why? The biggest factor I see is that many in business simply don’t recognize the difference between strategy and tactics.
Tactics can be learned quickly—they’re essential, yes, but they come and go, are short-term in nature, and can far too easily be driven by “Shiny Object Syndrome.” Strategy, on the other hand, is driven by seeing the big picture and often only comes with the wisdom of time and experience.
Unfortunately, the struggle to grasp the difference leads to businesses overvaluing tactical skills while undervaluing the deep strategic insight that more experienced candidates can bring to the table. The result? They fail to hire or retain those who could guide their long-term success.
Businesses need to rethink their approach and recognize that in marketing, real strategic thinking generally comes from experience—and that’s something worth valuing.
